Description: The collection comprises; the letters of Jane Williams to her daughter Mrs Jane Elizabeth Williams, 1859-1879, providing family news, accounts of domestic life and social activities in the Hawkes Bay; miscellaneous correspondence of Williams family members, 1867-1879; and letters from Edward Wanklyn to his brother-in-law William Leonard Williams, 1872-1881. Source of title - Supplied title Jane Williams nee Nelson married William Williams in 1825. They were appointed to New Zealand by the Church Missionary Society almost immediately and settled at Paihia in the Bay of Islands in 1826. Their second child, Jane Elizabeth was born a year later. The Williams' moved to Poverty Bay in 1840, where Jane was the first white woman in the district. Jane Elizabeth married her cousin Henry Williams in 1849 and remained in the Bay of Islands at Pakaraka. Her father was appointed Bishop of Waiapu in 1859 and when Hawkes Bay was included in the Diocese in 1867 he and Jane moved to Napier. William Williams died in 1879, Jane Williams in 1896. There are also 35 letters to William Leonard Williams, (Jane and William's third child) who married Sarah Wanklyn of Westmoreland in 1853. The letters are from his brother-in-law Edward Wanklyn.
