Le Breton, Louis Auguste Marie, 1818-1866

Breton, Louis Auguste Marie le, 1818-1866

Artist with Dumont d'Urville's 1838-1840 voyage to the Pacific, New Zealand and Antarctica aboard the Astrolabe. Born in Brittany, studied at the Naval Medical School in Brest, and was appointed 3rd class surgeon to the Astrolabe. After the death of the official artist in Hobart in the summer of 1839-1840, Le Breton took over the artist's functions on the expedition. He worked in both pencil and watercolour, drawing landscapes and natural history drawings. The expedition spent time at the Auckland Islands and further south inside the Antarctic Circle, and visited Otago, Akaroa and the Bay of Islands as well as Polynesia islands in the South Pacific. See Collins, Roger. New Zealand seen by the French. Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 1991, p 52 for further details.
