New Zealand author, born in Levin. Also known as Ms Cassia Joy Coles. Began her career writing novels for adults, and later began writing for children. Also involved in teaching early reading skills and has written many books to assist in teaching reading. Recognised with numerous national and international literary awards. Patron of the Storylines Childrens Literature Charitable Trust. Awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commeomroation Medal 1990, Officer of the Order of the British Empire 1992, New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993, Massey University Honorary Doctor of Literature 1993, Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005, and Member of the Order of New Zealand 2017.
