Duppa, Brian Philip Darrell, 1832-1892

Nephew of George Duppa and working with him on his farm in New Zealand in the early 1860s. Born Paris, 0 October 1832, while his father was British Consul in Paris. His parents were Baldwin Francis Duppa and Catherine née Darrell. The family home was Hollingbourne House, Maidstone, Kent. Educated at Cambridge. He was in the British army and left Britain after a duel with a fellow-officer, whom he shot and killed. He travelled to Spain, then to Chile and other parts of South America, then to New Zealand where he worked on his uncle's farm at Amuri until at least March 1863. He then moved on to Australia and California, arriving in Arizona by December 1863 and was recorded as a miner in Prescott in April 1864. Lived in Arizona or New Mexico for the rest of his life, supported by remittances from his family

Description: Two complete 360 degree panoramas, back-to-back. The first one is 12 pages with two inserts, with a closer view of the station, homestead, outhouses, etc. The second, 14 pages plus 1 insert is a wider view of the countryside from a higher, more distant position. Notes include vegetation and landmarks, including Tekoa, Mt Veto, Jollie's Pass, Maori Kaik, Domett's run, top of Mt Pam [i.e. Mt Palmerston], Duppa's nephew Bryan, and his dog Norma. The drawing of Bryan Duppa is a back view of him seated by a flax-bush, the dog Norma seated at his side. His initials are below the drawing Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Description: A side view of an elderly sick horse (supposedly a race winner), a plough, two houses, the profile of a lawyer in a wig. There are also inscriptions and several practice signatures the latter probably the work of George Duppa's nephew Bryan Bryan Duppa visited his uncle at St Leonard's Station, Amuri, in early 1863.
