[Rawlinson, Gloria Jasmine?], 1918-1995 :[Sketchbook. ca 1937]

Date: 1937

By: Rawlinson, Gloria Jasmine, 1918-1995; Challis, Derek Arden, 1930-2021

Reference: E-925

Description: Sketchbook contains fragmentary pencil sketches of heads, figures, dogs, landscapes, still lifes, and the words of two poems: Page [37]: Fragments of four poems such as "I think of a boat that is lost..." and other poems by Japanese poets Fujiwara Kiyomasa, Minamoto no Shigeyuki, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, and Fujiwara no Toshiyuki Page [33]: The Grey Lodge: "This is my country, here my feet are set.." (July 1937) The "Pierrot and Pierrette" figures on pages [4] and [43] may relate to poems Gloria Rawlinson wrote to her friend Gwen Hawthorne (later Mitcalfe) in the 1920s. However the picture on page [43] has an ink-written caption (possibly added later) identifying the figres as Mrs Vette and Mrs R D Lyons. Sketchbook probably made by Gloria Rawlinson, previously attributed to Robin Hyde. Information in pers. com. from Megan Clayton, 29 June 2009. Megan Clayton advises that the sketchbook may date from the mid-1920s; however the artist appears older than 7, and a 1937 poem "The grey lodge" by Robin Hyde appears on page [33], possibly written out by Robin Hyde herself. The name Gloria Rawlinson appears on page [43] and a partial name on page [31]. Robin Hyde was a friend of Gloria's mother Rosalie, and it is possible that Rosalie drew some of the pictures, if they date from the 1920s. The profile portrait on pages [10] and [12] may be of Robin Hyde (Megan Clayton, 29 June 2009) Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Physical Description: Sketchbook of 30 leaves, each 200 x 168 mm. Provenance: Purchase, 2007 Transfers: From Manuscripts & Archives - MS-Group-1648 - Other material of the same provenance is housed at MS-Group-1648.
