Rawiri Kingi Puaha was a leading chief of the Ngati Toa. A grandson of the celebrated chief Takamaiterangi, and one of three sons of Te Matoe. His elder brother was Te Kanae, a tohunga, and his younger brother was Hohepa Tamaihengia. Their mother, Hinekoto, was a half sister of Te Rauparaha. Rawiri married Ria Waitohi, the daughter of Te Peehi Kupe and paramount chief of Ngati Toa. They had a daughter Raiha Puaha Prosser and son Hori Kerei. Rawiri had participated in all the early conflicts of the Ngati Toa prior to their migrating from Kawhia, including the latter raids against the tribes of the Kapiti district and the South Island. He fought at Haowhenua (1834-35) and Kuititanga (1839), worked on the whalers, and latter became a Wesleyan Minister. He dominated the early political affairs of the Ngati Toa with other figures such as Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata and other senior chiefs. Rawiri died at Takapuwahia, Porirua, on the 6th September 1858 (see "Te Karere Maori", Oct. 15, 1858), and was survived by his brothers Wi Te Kanae and Hohepa Tamaihengia, and son Hori Kerei and daughter Raiha.
