Hunter, George (Sir), 1859-1930

Son of George Hunter (1821-1880). Manager of Porangahau Station, Hawke's Bay from 1877. Member of Parliament for Waipawa from 1896 to 1899 and from 1911 to 1930. Member of the Patangata County Council for more than 30 years. Knighted in 1920. Married Mrs Edith May Munro/Munroe in 1922, a widow with three children. Description: Collection comprises 250 letters, mainly from George Hunter (1859-1930) to his father (Director of Bethune and Hunter in Wellington) relating to the running of Porangahau Station 1878-1880. Includes letters from Annie, the widow of William Henry Hunter, to her brother in law George Hunter (1821-1880) relating to her family's lives on the Station. Both writers mention the building and use of a chapel on the Station. Also includes business papers of George Hunter (1821-1880). George Hunter (1821-1880) bought Porangahau station in Hawkes Bay around 1854. Hunter's two sons David Souter and William Henry took over the management and running of the station until 1877 when George Hunter (1859-1930) took over. He was joined by his brother Paul in 1879. Description: This is a detailed hand-drawn cadastral map of a part of Hawke's Bay, south east of Waipukurau and shows an area from the Pourerere River to Porangahau along the coast and about 20 kilometres inland. The map not only gives the sheep station run boundaries, acreages and names of owners but the names of many suburban section owners. Maori land reserves, crown reserves, crown land and many topographical features are shown such as rivers, streams, swamp, bush areas, roads, towns and localities. Details are as follows. Gives the suburban sections of Porangahau with section numbers and acreages. Many sections have owners' names, those included are: E. McShane, J.D. Canning, T. Lamb, A. Luff, J.D. Ormond, T.B. Triphook, E. Wright, W. Hunter, T.G. Lambert, A.O. Lambert, H.O. Ledger, W. Colenso, H.P. Stuart, T. Gill, W. Roberts, Joseph Russell, J. Hughes, Stuart Kinsross, A.H. Russell, A. Wyatt and H.M.
