Description: Shows view of a collection of buildings adjoining the waterfront, including a circular glasshouse or pavillion. Of the closely grouped buildings, the verandahed two-storeyed building with pink side is Garwood's general store (identified by reference to Neg. 1/2-08561 in PRS), and the four-gabled building next-but-one, is Bruce's Hotel (identified in PRS Neg. 1/2-10294). There are willow and other European trees alongside the buildings. The hills behind are partially wooded. Probably painted around the end of the 1860s. The artist is known to have been in the vicinity after the wreck of the ketch (probably the "Crest") in 1868 - his picture of Akaroa Heads is dated 1869. PRS (Pictorial Reference Service) photo including Bruce's Hotel and dated "1860s" shows the hotel with only three gables, whereas another photo dated "1870s", shows it with the four gables, as in this painting.
