Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Description: Studio portraits of Maori in traditional dress. All photographed by Arthur James Iles. Most of the photographs are marked "Iles Photo Thames." Iles set up his Thames studio in 1893 and operated from there for most of the 1890s. The remainder are marked "Iles photo Auckland," and probably date from his first period there in 1900. By 1901 he was in Rotorua from where he returned to Auckland in 1911. Description: Copy negatives of cartes de visite portraits of Maori taken by various photographers. Includes what may be a page from a photograph album (1/4-030078). The images have been pinned to a board and photographed. A carte de visite exists (PA2-0722) in the collections for the same image as 1/4-030072 although it is not from this negative. 1/4-030073, 031735 and 031736 all have the same lettering on the verso giving photographer's reference number, customer's name and photograph size. Description: The original photographic portrait was taken by Rotorua photographer Arthur Iles. Published for Iles by George Hadfield, Wellington. Shows a head-and-shoulders portrait of the Ngāti Maru chief Matene Te Nga. He shows his distinctive facial moko and wears a kahu huruhuru (feather cloak). The portrait is encircled by a band of kōwhaiwhai. The outer edge of the plate is decorated with four native birds, at twelve, three, six and nine o'clock respectively: the kiwi, the kōtare (kingfisher), the kea and the kākā. There are also decorations of native plants: kōwhai (kakabeak), pikiareko (clematis), rātā and mānuka. Title supplied by Library.
