Description: Shows inlet formed by Bua River flowing into Sandalwood (Bua) Bay in foreground, one boat with lowered sail beside shore. There are about ten figures on or beside the boat. Behind are eight thatched buildings (the Mbua or Tiliva mission station), a stand of three palms, and other trees in background. Library has Shipley, C. Sketches in the Pacific (London, 1851) at NZ&P f920 SHI. Library has Henderson, G.C. Fiji and the Fijians 1835-1856 (Sydney, 1931) at NZ&P 919.611 HEN. G. C. Henderson, in his "Fiji and the Fijians 1835-1856" (Sydney, 1931), facing page 250, dates Shipley's work as 1848. Thomas Williams was the Methodist missionary in charge of Mbua (or Tiliva) station from 1847. Later in 1848, war broke out in the area as a result of the missionaries' teaching. Other Titles - Bua.
