South Island prints two

Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1956 to 1958. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Further images (and series of images) of note include: a series of images of the Kopara Sawmill with forests, exterior felling scenes, lumber yard, processing of timber, and workers; spectators at a Cobden soccer match; crib-logging on the Wataroa River; various road works and maintainence scenes; locomotive at Ngahere sawmill site; images relating to various mining activities; church buildings; municipal buildings; and some mountaineering prints. Description: Photographs relating to mountaineering and skiing taken by Les Cleveland circa 1950s to circa 1970. A small number of prints include caption information on the rear of the print. One vintage print is stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph." Contains prints of scenic mountain landscapes which feature peaks, valleys, and glaciers in the Southern Alps (including Mount Cook). There are several aerial photographs. Unidentified mountaineers are photographed, including climbers roped together on a mountain face, building a snow cave, and at mountain huts. Also contains photographs of a group backcountry skiing, likely in the South Island. Downhill ski scenes are mainly taken at Whakapapa Ski Field. People, in skiing attire, are photographed but are unidentified with the exception of Austrian ski instructor Joe Maka[d?] (giving a lesson) and Judy Ryan of the Taupo Ski Club ( in a group photograph with staff from the National Downhill). People are photographed relaxing in ski huts and smoking, and one woman has her leg in a full cast. Cleveland's wife Mary Cleveland is photographed at an alpine geothermal area, likely Ketetahi Springs. Title transcribed from item. Description: Contains photographic prints showing a range of subjects and locations relating to Les Cleveland's life, 1939 to circa 2007. Photographs taken by Les Cleveland and other unidentified photographers. Includes photographs and images relating to World War Two, photographs taken on Cleveland family trips overseas including in Portugal and the United States of America (Washington D.C. and New York City), and Cleveland family scenes in New Zealand including Donna Cleveland and her children Max and Maddie (Les Cleveland's grandchildren). A sequence of photographs shows author Michael Jackson's book launch on the 29th August 1997 in Palmerston North, with Les Cleveland appearing in one photograph. Photographs taken on the West Coast of New Zealand include photographs relating to mining, buildings, meatshooting, tramping trips with unidentified friends, and bush. A laser print of a nude of Mary Cleveland, taken circa 1970, is also included. Les Cleveland is photographed beside a river [circa 1940s to 1950s]. A modern print of a woman reclining with a fan, her dress falling off her shoulder, likely from circa 1900s, is unattributed. Photographic ephemera includes original print wallets, photographer's notes for development, and a paper fold used to keep a set of prints together. Title supplied by Library.
