Monro, Henry Alfred Home, 1824-1908

Land Court judge. Arrived at Hokianga ca 1835, the son of a CMS missionary. Later an interpreter for the Native Department, and then a Māori Land Court Judge. Noted for processing claims quickly and tending to award title only to tribal chiefs. He was a forebear of the New Zealand poet, Allen Curnow.

Description: Monro's copy of Davis' biography, with extensive annotations in Monro's hand. The annotations provide additional detail to the text and, in some cases, correct it. Includes 9 pages of notes, relating to two anecdotes illustrating tensions between Maori and Pakeha in the Hokianga and Bay of Islands in the late 1830s and early 1840s, the first regarding Mangamuka Tohukakahi of the Ihutai tribe, and the second re the trial and execution of a Maori for the murder of a European settler. Description: Two copies of a letter from Monro to his daughter, Mrs Ada Morrison, describing his early life in Tasmania and in Hokianga, to which his father brought the family in 1835 and where his father engaged in the timber trade This collection contains two copies of the letter describing the author's early life in Tasmania and Hokianga and some family history. The first copy of the letter was donated to the Library in 1958, by Professor Arnold Wall (Acc 99993). This letter was originally bound in a blue pamphlet case and referenced at qMS-1378. Description: These papers span folders 079 to 081. A note dated Apr 1918 in S P Smith's hand describes the contents as "Original papers supplied to the Govt paper `Karere Maori' in the fifties of last century - mostly in the writing of H A H Monro, native interpreter, Thos H Smith Asst Under Sec Native Dept, and others". The papers include both Maori and English versions of papers for publication. This volume contains drafts of articles, notices and advertisements dealing with market information, opinions about land transactions, the boundaries of various land blocks, Biblical texts and proclamations from the Governor; there is also a letter from Hawkes Bay Maori about the conflict between Te Hapuku and Te Moananui, promising that Pakeha will not be interfered with, and an account of the British colonisation of India and concerns about the effects on the Hindu and Muslim religions. Arrangement: According to Smith's note these papers also originally included letters to Donald McLean from Henry and William Halse and from John Rogan. Description: Shows a farmhouse on the brow of a hill, with bushy hill outlines beyond. The buildings, one double-storeyed and one single-storeyed with verandah, are behind a broken fence line. In the foreground are two cabbage trees at the left, and a line of low plants across the foreground. Handwritten notes on the backing board identify Mr Preece as the Reverend J Preece, a missionary. Preece worked in the Thames-Coromandel area until he moved to the Urewera in 1847. (Backing board retained.)
