Served as a war artist in World War II, starting in November 1942 as a sign-writer, with his appointment as war artist not confirmed until February 1944. Active sketching and painting operations in the Pacific, mostly on the Solomon Islands. His wife died in 1959. In 1965 he married Rosalie Peace Pahi, later Mrs Rosalie Archer. Description: Marsden standing on the shore of Oihi Bay, Rangihoua, Bay of Islands, in a makeshift pulpit, draped with a woven cloth, preaching to a large group of Maori and Pakeha. His translator, Ruatara, can be seen to his right, while Hongi and Korokoro, in their regimental uniforms, are at the heads of their iwi or hapu behind the party of settlers.
