Strathallan (Ship)

A ship of 550 tons built in 1857, employed by Shaw, Savill and Co to transport immigrants to New Zealand. Its first voyage, under Captain Todd, sailed from the Leith on 4 October 1857 and arrived at Port Chalmers on 8 January 1858.

Robert was killed in a farm accident in Jun 1875 and Elizabeth continued to farm there, remarrying twice, firstly to Robert Stokes then to John Ward, nephew of her first husband. Description: Transcript of an extract from the Journal of Rev George Morice covering the period Aug-3 Dec 1866 with an introduction, footnotes and conclusion supplied by the transcriber, Mary Porteous. It provides a detailed description of Morice's voyage from England to New Zealand aboard the `Strathallan' including information about his fellow passengers and crew and the daily weather conditions. He comments at length on the various types of fish and birds that they encounter and catch. He keeps a daily log of the ship's position as well as miles covered for each day and remarks on some of the more extraordinary ocassions aboard the ship such as the `Crossing the line ceremony' and the love affair and letters between two of the steerage passengers.
