Description: Indenture is dated 20th March 1840. It is signed by William Charles Wentworth and John Jones, and documents the apportioning of "six undivided eighteenth" shares in the land as transacted under the main Wentworth Jones indenture (15 February 1840) for the 'purchase' of the South Island. Also includes a transcription of the indenture made by Peter Myers in 2020. Title supplied by Library The Library holds the first indenture of 15 February 1840 at Library reference MSO-Papers-4947. It is possible that the indenture came to donor's father through his ancestor Bennett Frederick Boyd Myers, who was involved in whaling in Australia. Quantity: 1 box(es). 1 folder(s). Physical Description: Large format holograph indenture on vellum, folded in two and then in four. Folded dimensions 30.4 x 12 cm. A4 typescript papers. Provenance: Donor inherited the indenture from his father, who had a substantial archival collection.

Description: Looking south along a beach from a hill at its north end. Shows a board inscribed: Karetai's mistake. Presumably refers to Chief Karetai's sales of land to Europeans in the mid-nineteenth century Pipikaretu Point is on the north-eastern side of Otago Peninsula, across from Otakou. Description: The Wentworth-Jones deed (sometimes called the "Wentworth indenture") is a deed signed in Sydney on 15 Feb 1840 recording the purported sale of the South Island by the Ngai Tahu chiefs Tuhawaiki, Karetai, Kaikoareare, Tukawa, Taiaroa, Te Whaikai Pokene, Tohowaiki and Topi Patuki to William Wentworth and John Jones. This deed appears to be that kept by Jones. Wentworth's own version is held in the Mitchell Library in Sydney. The wording of both is identical. Both deeds are particularly significant for the moko drawn on the deeds by the chiefs (or their representatives). For further information researchers are recommended to read the section on the deeds and their signing in Harry Evison "Te wai pounamu the greenstone island" (Aoraki Press, Wellington 1993), pp 114-124. Description: Copy of a deed purporting to show the sale of the South Island by eight Ngai Tahu chiefs to two Sydney businessmen, W C Wentworth and John Jones. Two deeds were drawn up. This one belonged to Wentworth. The original deed kept by Jones is held by the Library (MSO-Papers-4947). The wording is identical in both, and both feature moko drawn by the chiefs or their representatives. For further information on the deeds and their historical background researchers are recommended to read the relevant pages of the book by Harry Evison "Te wai pounamu the greenstone land" (Aoraki Press, Wellington, 1993) pp114-124. A full transcript of the Mitchell Library deed was published in 1979 ("The Wentworth indenture", Nags Head Press, Christchurch, 1979).
