Description: Most of the cards date from ca 1904 to ca 1920. New Zealand cities and towns are represented, including many notable buildings, monuments, and parks. Tourist destinations like Lake Wakatipu, the Whanganui river, and thermal areas feature. One group depict native forest as scenery. There are also memorial cards, the largest number for Richard Seddon, and one for T E Taylor Mayor of Christchurch. One card is of the famous female cross dresser and con-man/woman, Amy Bock. Two cards depict champion New Zealand rowers, Richard Arnst, William Webb, George Whelch, and W Fogwell. Several of the greeting cards, which are scattered throughout the album, depict Maoriland maidens. Another group of cards feature sheep, in flocks on the road, crossing bridges, and at pasture. There is also a group of cattle beasts including highland cattle. Thermal areas include Whakarewarewa, steaming cliffs on Lake Rotomahana, and Waimangu. Volcanoes include Mount Ngauruhoe erupting, Mount Ruapehu, and Mount Egmont. There are also views of the Southern Alps, and one view of the Franz Josef Glacier. Description: Most of the cards date from 1904 to 1914. New Zealand cities and towns are represented, including many notable buildings. Tourist destinations like Lake Wakatipu, the Whanganui river, and Milford Sound feature. One group relate to trams in Invercargill and Wellington, with a photograph from the 1950s of a horse drawn tram in an unidentified town. There is also one photograph of a dairy factory and the milk arriving in wagons. The largest group of town images relate to Palmerston North, most dating from about 1908. The largest group of post cards in the album are all sorts of greeting cards, many of which are hand coloured. Places represented include Christchurch, Hanmer Springs, Invercargill, Wellington, Governors Bay, Rotorua, Pigeon Bay, Lake Wakatipu, Napier, Dunedin, Te Aroha, Skippers Gorge, Hastings, Lyttelton, Milford Sound, Lake Taupo, Waimate, Kawau Island, Whanganui River, Timaru, Oamaru, White Island, New Plymouth, Paekakariki, Akaroa, Palmerston North, Westport, and Hamilton. Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: An unidentified landscape, probably depicting the volcanic plateau of the North Island as viewed looking east. Mounts Ngauruhoe and Tongariro appear to be smoking. The middle ground shows thick forest leading towards the foothills; in the foreground, two Māori men have set up camp on a river bank. A bridge crossing the river can be seen behind them, with another figure, probably also Māori, upon it. Jeanine Graham's book 'Frederick Weld' (Christchurch: Whitcoulls Ltd., 1983)mentions that in October 1854, Weld and fellow MP James Stuart-Wortley travelled through the volcanic plateau region of the North Island (p.43).
