Academic and adventurer. Pioneer in the study of ecology in NZ; the sole biologist and meteorologist for NZ's first Antarctic study in 1956 (the TransAntarctic Expedition), which culminated in the race to the pole between Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Vivian Fuchs.
