Baxter, George, 1804-1867

Etcher, lithographer, printer, born in Lewes, and working in London. He patented a method of printing in oil colours in 1834, publishing many prints, including a number relating to New Zealand and the South Pacific. He never visited Oceania.

Pritchard wears a naval uniform with braid on the raised collar and cuffs. He holds a book in his right hand. A portrait of 'Pomare, Queen of Tahiti, the persecuted Christian, surrounded by her family at the afflictive moment when the French forces were landing'. Description: A standing male, possibly Te Po Kurikuri. He has full body tattoo, a spear in his left hand, a fan in his right. He is wearing an elaborate head-dress and is draped with a cloth over his shoulders and his hips. in the background are a Rarotongan canoe, a European sailing ship, hills and coconut trees. Title taken from back of old frame. The print was originally published as the frontispiece to John Williams' 'A narative of missionary experience in the South Sea islands' (London, Williams, 1837). The Library has a slightly variant version of this print at A-282-017, showing almost no visible tattooing. The variant version may be faded from lengthy display before coming to the Library. Possibly influenced by (or an influence on) a contemporary portrait, 'Te Ipu, Marquesan chief' published by Charles Samuel Stewart in his 'A visit to the South Seas' (London, 1837).
