Businessman. Born London, arrived Wellington 1841 on `Jane' with his wife and three children. After a period as a sheepfarmer at Palliser Bay he entered into a partnership with merchant John Johnston, and subsequently joined Levin senior. In 1869 he was called to the Legislative Council, a position he held till Mar 1885, and his son Robert (1833-1896) was appointed in his stead. Married three times; first in 1825, in London, to Harriet Maria; secondly, in 1832, in London, to Mary Catherine Buckland (died 1864 aged 55); and thirdly, on 24 Dec 1867, at St Paul's Church, Wellington, to Jessica Rankin (1818-1891), and English poetess who had come to New Zealand earlier that year. He died at Seacroft, Hobson Street, Wellington, on 16 Aug 1903 aged 100 years. See also Encyclopedia of New Zealand edited by McLintock Vol 2, page 765.
