Description: Roy Fraser Beadle recalls being brought up by foster parents in Timaru - his subsequent search for his natural parents; going to work in the mines in 1939 and his involvement with the Miner's Union. Talks about the West Coast Composite Coal Committee - 1951 `Strike' and government's intervention. Describes the struggles between coal and oil as power sources, with reference to Tom Shand MP, Minister of Mines. Mentions closure of Wallsend Mine and miners moving to Dobson Mine which also closed (1968). Was Secretary of the Dobson Miner's Union - explains how the Dobson Mine was the first mine to be covered by redundancy payments. Mentions the Strongman mine disaster. Recalls being made redundant, getting a job as groundsman at Greymouth Golf Links, and his desire to get back to trade union activities. Speaks about time as Secretary of the Westland Timber worker's Union (1971) and recalls the timber worker's confrontation with `Greenies' (Conservationists) and its effect on the union - reducing it from 700 to 200. Mentions Westland Timber Workers' Union joining with New Zealand Timber Workers Union due to falling numbers in Westland. Recalls being awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) medal. Other union involvement included: Secretary of Fisherman's Association and West Coast Forestry Enterprise. Was also a member of Greymouth Chamber of Commerce, a member of West Coast Development Council and a member of the Rotary club. Description: Bill File born Gisborne 1921. Recalls origins of parents. Discusses childhood in Gisborne during Depression and love of rugby and injury resulting from the sport. Gives reasons for joining Railways in 1939 as locomotive cleaner and progression to railway fireman. Mentions first memory of union - father involved in the Timber Workers Union. Discusses conditions of work in railways and outlines labour process. Recalls transfer to Auckland and marriage 1942; election to Auckland branch committee of EFCA in 1944; becoming an engine driver; return to Wellington in 1955 and election as Grand Councillor 1958. Describes duties as National Councillor and time spent on advocacy for union members. Backgrounds appointment as General Secretary and terms of appointment. Recalls appointment by Tom Shand to Conscientious Objection and Compulsory Union Membership Board and mentions Bert Bockett who was chair of the Board. Refers to Trust Scheme to maintain wages of sick or injured union members. Discusses need for more stringent medical examination for locomotive men and EFCA response to disasters and accidents with reference to Manawatu Gorge derailment and serious accident outside Auckland which was blamed on poor training. Describes introduction of system for training locomotive trainees developed by the LEA in the 1970s `properly structured system of training'. Mentions Workmen's Compensation Act. Description: A series of pictures arranged around an archway illustrating the activities in which unions are concerned (such as superannuation, relief of widow, accident provisions), and in which carpenters are engaged (centring, and the workshop). The archway is surmounted by symbolic figures of Industry, Art, Truth and Justice. The figure of Joseph of Nazareth is at the top of the image. At the centre of the lower edge is a scene of emigrants aboard ship. Near the bottom are spaces for the name of the union and for other information, in this case used for the New Zealand Carpenters Union name and their membership certificate. Compare the Library's large oil after Waudby, Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners Wellington Branch (G-830-3). The background image is identical and has been widely used by unions as a banner ever since its creation in England in 1867.
