Carkeek, Morgan, 1846-1927

Well known surveyor who worked extensively throughout the greater Wellington region. He surveyed much of the Tararua Ranges and surrounding areas and developed strong relationships with local Maori during this period. Born in Nelson. He married Enereta Te Whakarato, daughter of the celebrated Ngati Koroki (Ngati Raukawa) chief Wi Te Manewha of Otaki. Their son Rikihana Carkeek became a leading personality in the Otaki district. Description: Map of the estate of A. Hall in Otaki between the road and the river, along with a small part across the river. Sections, which appear to be fenced, include acreages of the whole, while some sections include areas of bush marked topographically and also numerically as acreages. The section across the river includes acreages of ploughed and unploughed land. The Hautere Road and the main road from Wellington to Otaki are named. Mark's gate and house are marked adjacent to a water tank. A site of a second house, with a stable and windmill, is marked adjacent to the river.
