Well known surveyor who worked extensively throughout the greater Wellington region. He surveyed much of the Tararua Ranges and surrounding areas and developed strong relationships with local Maori during this period. Born in Nelson. He married Enereta Te Whakarato, daughter of the celebrated Ngati Koroki (Ngati Raukawa) chief Wi Te Manewha of Otaki. Their son Rikihana Carkeek became a leading personality in the Otaki district.
