Description: A sketch of W H (William Herbert) Alington, dressed as a dragoman for a fancy-dress party. His jacket and Turkish-style pants are dark blue, his shirt white and his stockings, sash belt and turban red. He also wears a long white beard. The verso inscription 'By Aunt Maude' suggetsts that the work might be attributed to Hester Maud Alington; the watercolour is very similar to a sketch made on the verso of a painting of Castle Bellingham (A-446-021). However the initials CMA, bottom right of this watercolour, suggests that the artist might have been Charlotte Mabel Alington. A dragoman was an interpreter or guide in countries where Arabic, Turkish, or Persian is spoken. Alington Family :[English or European street scene, ca 1833]

Date: 1833

From: Alington family :[Assorted watercolours, lithographs, sketches and curios, either by or belonging to family members. ca 1833-1961]

By: Alington family

Reference: A-446-018

Description: Shows a scene set on an English or European town, probably early 19th century. A soldier and a civilian ride together in a carriage, accompanied by another civilan and soldier, on horseback. A number of soldiers and civilians, including two women and a child, look on as they ride by. The carriage contains bars, suggesting it is transporting prisoners. It is difficult to place where this scene might be set, given the lack of certainty of the date. The uniforms of the soldiers suggest they are Spanish, or possibly French. Similarly, the women's dress could be English, but they appear to be wearing sabots, more common in Europe. Inscriptions: Verso - top left - Revd John Alington For Louie [Winifred Louie] or Hester [Hester Maud, grand-daughters of Rev Alington]; Verso - top right - We think 1833 (when J A married) C S A [Charles Sydney Alington?] Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s).
