Description: A view of the Dominican priory, designed by Francis Petre and built in 1877. The image is taken from the corner of Smith and Rattray Streets, and the edge of the neighbouring St Joseph's Cathedral, also designed by Petre, can be seen on the left Petre was influenced in his design of the building by Anglo-Saxon architecture. The priory was the largest un-reinforced concrete building in the southern hemisphere at the time. Description: Transparencies of New Zealand South Island churches taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the name or brief description, and/or the location, of the church. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Churches and locations annotated on the slide mounts include St Paul's Presbyterian Church in Oamaru, St Luke's Anglican Church in Oamaru, St John's Anglican Church in Waikouaiti, Knox Church in Dunedin, First Church in Dunedin, Dominican Priory in Dunedin, St Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Dunedin, and Sacred Heart Church in Dunedin. Title transcribed from item. Some slides have dates annotated. Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in a six-row metal slide case, each row holding 25 slides, and the case capable of holding up to 150 slides.
