Dominion Monarch (Ship)

The Dominion Monarch was built in 1939 by Messrs Swan, Hunter & Wigham Ruchardson of Wallsend-on-Tyne for the Shaw Savill & Albion Company. She was a quadruple screw motorship of 26463 tons gross and could carry 508 passengers first class. She was built for use on the United Kingdom to New Zealand service. Used as a troopship in World War 2 she was scrapped in 1962.

Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. Description: Bollard served with the Territorial forces in New Zeland during the first years of World War Two. In May 1943 he left New Zealand with the 9th Reinforcements for the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force aboard the `Dominion Monarch' bound for Egypt. He attended Signals School at Maadi Camp and left Egypt on 18 October aboard the `Nieuw Holland' bound for Sicily. He was attached to 28 Battalion and helped to provide its radio service. He remained with the Battalion for the remainder of the war and describes the Allied advance up through Italy. He witnessed the attack on Cassino and also describes his visits to various Italian cities, including Rome and Venice, while on leave. Bollard was awarded a rehabilitation bursary to study at Cambridge University and on 16 October 1945 he left Italy by train bound for France and then by sea to England. Description: The Dominion Monarch, its construction and launch. Shows the ship under construction in Hunter & Wigham Richardson & Co's shipyard at Wallsend on Tyne, England. Images show the frame almost finished, the decks under construction, the structure designed to hold the propeller shafts in place, and a propeller boss being positioned. Two images show the liner on the slipway before launching, and two others show the launching which took place on the 27th of July 1938, and some of the crowd attending the event. Another image dated the 7th of November 1938 shows the Dominion Monarch moored for fitting out. There is also a view from the air of the liner at sea. Five interior views of the liner are included in this collection. They are: the period fireplace in the smoking room, the dining room, the palm court, a cabin, and a barbers shop. The Dominion Monarch was built for the Shaw Savill & Albion Company. It was designed specifically for the South African, Australian, and New Zealand service. It was a cargo liner of 27,155 tons carrying only first class passengers, and was the largest of this type of ship built. It was completed in January 1939, and began its maiden voyage to Wellington, New Zealand on the 17th of February 1939, arriving on the 11th of March 1939. During the second World War the Dominion Monarch served as a troop ship. She was refitted for her original purpose after the war, and continued on the South African and Australasian run until 1962. Description: Diary recording the events of a trip aboard the `Dominion Monarch' from Wellington to England. Diary relates the onboard activities of the author and her male "Cousin E". Includes observances of church services, sports, films and other passengers. The writer appears to be travelling first class and there are some interesting depicitions of shipboard life. The `Dominion Monarch' left Wellington on the 13th March 1952 arriving at Southampton on 16th April 1952. Stopovers at ports along the journey have been diarised. The narration continues with excurisions around the English and Scottish countryside including visits to London, Jersery and Edinburgh. The writer appears to be staying with family members for a large part of the holiday. On 30th October she departs London for New Zealand. Diary ends 5th November 1952 while travelling at sea.
