Private school. Built at 20 Fitzherbert Terrace in 1878 for Mrs Mary Ann Swainson (1833?-1897). When Mrs Swainson died in 1897, her daughter Miss Mary Jessie Swainson (1861-1942) became the Headmistress, along with Beatrice Richmond and Esther Mary Baber ran the Pipitea Private School (from 1899 to 1906). Baber purchased Swainson's original school in 1907 and was headmistress for the next 25 years. Baber sold the school to the diocese of Wellington in 1920 when it was offered 10 acres of land in Karori by the Riddiford family on the condition that it bought the school. The school was renamed Samuel Marsden Collegiate School and in 1926 it moved to Karori. Baber resigned as headmistress in 1931. (DNZB Vol 3 pp25-26)

Source of title - Supplied title In 1878, Mrs Swainson set up a school for girls on Fitzherbert Terrace, Wellington. After her death in 1897, her daughter, Mary Swainson carried on the school until 1907, when it was bought by Miss Baber. In 1920, a Board of Trustees, under the chairmanship of the Anglican Bishop of Wellington, bought the school, with Miss Baber remaining as headmistress. The school was given its present name, and in 1926 was relocated to its current site in Karori. A Trust Management Board was set up to manage the school; the name was then changed to Board of Governors, but later reverted to the original title.
