Blind Half-Hundred, The Dirty Half Hundred

The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment ("The Dirty Half Hundred") had a detachment of two companies in New Zealand in 1834 and was in New Zealand between 1863-67 as the 50th (West Kent) Regiment under the command of Lt.-Cols. N. Wodehouse, H.E. Weare, C.B., R. Waddy. The Canterbury Regiment is allied.

Description: Shows a beach and shallow water (tidal flats?) in the foreground, with a range of hills behind. There is a group of tents behind a fortification at the top of one hill. A man sits fishing in the foreground (probably ensign Thomas Waring of the 50th regiment), and some soldiers with horses stand around a fire at centre left. In the river are the stumps of many totara trees. On the left is a large toetoe bush Left page also includes diary notes for 5th - 7th February 1865. Very similar to his "On the Waitotara River, 7 Feb 1865", held at Auckland City Art Gallery - it is inscribed "The Waitotatara River at a point where the steamer was stopped by a curious belt of submerged totara stumps - the sea is behind the spectator about a mile". A photo of the Auckland work is in Drawings & Prints file (both colour and black and white copies).. The name Waitotara comes from the tree stumps in the river. Description: Steep hills divided by a steeply-falling river. Red-coated soldiers of the 50th Regiment shown with the track and bridge over which they moved their cannons. Several Maori standing close to the bridge and a waterfall. Further Maori indicated on top of the hill to the right. Lieutenant Thomas, in charge of the transport, shown on the peak of a hill to the left. 'Cannonade' appears to be an error for carronade, a short heavy cannon with wide bore. Note on back in the hand of the copyist: "Having failed in obtaining Mrs Guard and her two children from the natives although H M ship bombarded the forts and destroyed their canoes (ammunition being demanded in exchange by them which Her Majesty would not have been pleased to part in Traffic as they wished it). Two cannonades were landed 2 miles to the Eastward under protection of the ship and military dragged across this creek and put in position on a bank commanding the ports from which the natives were driven and possession taken" Other Titles - Carronades Inscriptions: Recto - top left: Sailors transporting the cannonade with their guards.
