Merchant, mine owner, businessman, politician, and Catholic layman. Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, probably in 1839 or 1840. MHR (Member of House of Representatives) for Grey Valley in 1876-1878, and director of Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, 1896-1916. See DNZB (Vol 3, 1901-1920, p259, K9)

Description: Letter book comprising 996 numbered leaves of tissue paper, preceded by a section of pages with alphabetised index intended for the entry of names and addresses of correspondents with blotting paper interleaving. The letters are written in ink, and some have amendments in pencil, and annotations in blue pencil. Letters in this volume are dated between 7 August 1894 and 20 May 1898. The spine title label "Letter Book" is augmented with "Private" above, and "A H Turnbull" below. Inscriptions: Recto - top left - First typewritten private letter seems to be to Maggs Bros. p. 792 [pencil on page 1] Quantity: 1 volume(s) in slipcase. Physical Description: Holograph in letter book of 996 numbered leaves of tissue paper in leather half binding with blue cloth boards and marbled endpapers, bookplate on front pastedown, 28.5 cm.
