Description:
The centre foreground shows a man bent over scything or weeding, and a seated man in hat and red shirt, with Maori kete (?) beside him. At the left foreground is the weatherboard side of a shed, and in the centre background is a substantial homestead and outbuildings, with hilly land formations in right distance. In right foreground is a hat with red band, beside part of a farm implement, perhaps a plough. The largely flat land is dotted with shrubs.
Edward Chudleigh was a land holder with property at Wharekauri, and at Waihou, on the Chatham Islands from 1866 to 1909. His diaries were published in 1950.
Artist's name may be Hurst, Hirst, or Hunt. No person of that name is mentioned in the published version of Chudleigh's diaries for 1881, but a Charles Hirst is mentioned in 1864, in Canterbury, and Chudleigh did visit Canterbury in 1881, shortly after his wedding.
At the end of 1881-beginning of 1882, Chudleigh had trouble with his servants who were insubordinate and dishonest.
Shack on the site at present (1996) could be the one on left, "Te Kooti's hut". - punga logs with old sailingship door. This property and Edward Chudleigh's property in Gisborne remained in a family trust under a brother of Edward (possibly Augustine) until at least the 1950s. The Chudleigh estate papers went to Canterbury Museum. (Information from Mr & Mrs Graham Fenwick, September 1996).
