New Zealand artist, born 1849 in Geelong, Australia. Daughter of Hon. Matthew Holmes of Otago. She was part of the Hodgkins' circle in Dunedin. Exhibited with the Otago Art Society from 1878, and was on its council in 1886-87. From about 1892, the family moved to Wellington, where she became well-known in the art and social world, entertaining Rudyard Kipling, and the Duke and Duchess of York. She was her father's companion for many years, living in Hawkestone Street in her own home after his death. Died aged 76 on 16 January, 1925 (a suggestion that her date of birth was 1858 seems unlikely, since the earliest drawings in her album are dated 1868, and they appear to be the work of an adult, not a 10-year-old).
