Braithwaite, Warwick, 1896-1971

Atearoa (Pseudonym), 1896-1971, Braithwaite, Henry Warwick, 1896-1971, Wharton, Henry (Pseudonym), 1896-1971

Warwick Braithwaite became the first New Zealand conductor of international stature. He was not only a notable conductor but also a composer and writer of short stories under the pseudonym Henry Wharton. He also used the name Atearoa [sic] when writing the grand opera Pendragon. Following study at the Royal Academy of Music, he joined the touring O'Mara Opera Company in 1919 and thereafter made opera the centre of his life, pursuing an active career in Britain at Sadler's Wells, Covent Garden (1950-1953) and with the Australian National Opera (1954-1955). He identified himself with the Welsh National Opera as musical director (1956-1960), then rejoined Sadler's Wells, retiring in 1968. (History of New Zealand Music by J Thomson, p.192)
