Recalls childhood, at New Lynn and later at Waterview - father was a furniture manufacturer with a business in Newton (where motorway is now). Recalls first job at Milne and Choyce; Red Cross experience; nursing overseas during war years as a VAD and training at Narrowneck, Devonport; posting to Motutapu Island; journey to England and later to and from Middle East, on the `Oranje', a Dutch hospital ship; post war education - post graduate nursing course at Palmerston North; involvement with Operatic Society where she met husband; experience with Social Welfare as a non-reach child welfare officer - was on Children's Board (now defunct) and various community commitments in Waihi Beach where she moved with husband 1980. Talks about involvement with protest against prospecting in the Orakawa Scenic Reserve and involvement with National Council of Women for 25 years. Source of title - Supplied title Accompanying material - For biographical details compiled by Tiller, see Back file Arrangement: The material has been put in folders as it was received, in a very disorganised state. The contents of each folder tend to contain material relating to one activity, and this has been indicated in the preliminary list where possible, but all folders include a mixture of subject material to some degree. Mavis Tiller was involved in a wide range of Wellington and national organisations from the early 1950s. She had 3 children and her early public involvement was in the Mother's Helpers Society and school affairs. From 1966-1970 she was President of the National Council of Women and between 1973 and 1982 was vice-convenor, then convenor, of the International Council of Women Standing Committee on International Relations and Peace. Tiller was a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Social Security in New Zealand which reported in 1972 and was awarded an OBE in 1971 and CBE in 1987. Quantity: 4 box(es). 1.30 Linear Metres.
