Built in 1868 by Aitken & Mansell of Glasgow, and launched as the 'Dunfillan'. She was an iron full-rigged ship of 898 gross tons, and made one voyage to New Zealand as the 'Dunfillan' in 1870, when still owned by W Ross. Purchased by the New Zealand Shipping Co. late in 1873 and in 1874 was renamed Mataura, travelling under the old colours until she was painted in the NZSCo. colours, adopted in 1875. The first of the company's ships to be fitted with Haslam's patent air-dry refrigerator, in 1882. She took the second cargo of frozen meat, in June 1874. The first load having been taken by the 'Dunedin' in February 1882. She carried passengers from 1874, and passengers and cargo from 1882. In 1895 she was sold to Captain Bruusguard of Drammen, Norway, and renamed 'Alida'. Dismasted and abandoned in the Pacific Ocean on 24 August 1900.
