Description: Shows one sailing ship in centre foreground, almost stuck in the icefloe, with 11 men standing on the ice, some pulling on the ship with a rope. A group of men are still on board. In right distance another sailing ship waits in the open sea. ATL has volumes of the Atlas pittoresque from Dumont d'Urville's "Voyage au pole sud et dans l'Oceanie", containing tinted lithograph of the same scene, at NZ&P f910.4 DUM. National Library of Australia holds original hand-coloured tinted lithograph from which this reproduction has been made. Other Titles - The corvettes leaving the icepack, 9 February 1838. Extended Title - From Dumont, d'Urville, J. Voyage au pole sud et dans l'Oceanie. Atlas pittoresque, plate 25. (Originally published in Paris, Gide, 1846.) Dumont d'Urville's voyage to the south pole was in 1837-1840. His account was published 1842-53, with volume 1 of the pictorial atlas published in 1846.
