QSM 1991, honorary doctorate, Victoria University of Wellington 1998, for services as quality controller of Maori language, written and spoken. Author and editor of numerous publications including assistant editor of volume one of the Māori publication of 'Nga Tangata Taumata Rau (Dictionary of New Zealand Biography), published in 1990, and 'Wahanga Maori', for the Historical Atlas of New Zealand. She also wrote 'Nga Tohu o Te Tiriti: Making a Mark'. Member of the Waiariki representative executive council for the Māori Women's Welfare League from 1965 to 1969. Associated with the National Library of New Zealand, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography and Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission). Her formidable nature and passion for accuracy of te reo Māori led to the nickname 'Taniwha No. 1'.
