Description: Fishing boats in the sea to the left, possibly in the Bay of Naples, with people on shore, buildings including castles on hill-tops, high hills to the right This oil is one of three bequeathed to ATL by Mona Clifton Gordon in 1977. ATL was notified that the oils were at Waikato Museum of Art & History and it was decided that the works would remain on long-term loan to Waikato. In 1992 ATL was reminded the works were still at Waikato, and they were recalled. They arrived in April 1993. Other Titles - Untitled sea scene (Waikato Museum of Art & History) Albin Martin first visited Italy in 1839 when he travelled to Rome to join Samuel Palmer and Hannah Linnell, who were honeymooning there. When Albin Martin married Jemima Kempe in 1841, they in turn left for a two year honeymoon in the Bay of Naples. Quantity: 1 oil(s). Includes letters from Mona Gordon, 22 December [no year]; Eileen Duggan [undated]; Te Mete (S Percy Smith) 19 July 1910, which discusses the Ngāti Whakaue rangatira, Haerehuka; T E Donne, 17 June 1918, which discusses the placing of Cowan's articles in London newspapers - specifically mentions Kimble Bent and Barnet Burns articles; Whitcombe & Tombs, 6 November 1918 and 12 December 1935; George Sherriff, 14 April 1921, which is relating to the attack on Parihaka in 1881 and sketches that Sherriff made at the time; Walter W Jones, 10 and 27 July 1926; T C Schnackenberg, 18 September and 3 October 1926; Otago Daily Times, 1 October 1927 [Enclosed with clippings about N.Z. Writers' Week 1936, and a letter from Joyce West relating to plagiarism, 1 October 1938]; F O V Acheson, 10 November 1927; Alf Warbrick, 25 June 1928 and 10 October 1931; Rotorua Morning Post, 21 August 1936; and Patricia Moore, 14 September 1936 and 16 October 1936. Also includes a typescript letter from Tumanako Tamariki, written in Māori, relating to the 'Queen Carnival Sick & Wounded Fund' which has part of a letter written on the back [undated] written mostly in English, with some Māori phrases. It seems to relate to the building of an "obelisk" on One Tree Hill in Auckland. Also includes a cartoon of Sir James Carroll which was in an envelope annotated "Low's cartoon of Timi Kara.
