Miss Christine Little - The Donovan story

Description: The essay is the story of Patrick Donovan, an Irishman who came to Auckland in 1840 with his first wife, Julia McAuliffe and their children. They first went to Hobart and then Melbourne before arriving in New Zealand. He established himself in business in Auckland as innkeeper of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Shortland Crescent, and later farmed at Onehunga. He was the owner of land in various parts of Auckland. In 1853 he was elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, serving till 1855. Julia died in 1845 and he remarried Elizabeth Scott in the same year. Description: Collection comprises John Scott's own papers, mainly in the form of official invitations and his appointment as Extra Gentleman Usher, and those of his wife, Marguerite, concerning her activities as a spouse of a Foreign Affairs officer and as a Wren during World War II. Also includes some material relating the Chachmaille and Boxer families and electronic family history documents. Photographic materials include four photograph albums and one loose print, relating to the Cachemaille, Boxer and Scott families. Images taken between 1913-1939 by a range of photographers. Also eight digitised portraits of the Cachemaille and Scott families. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Manuscript materials divided into three series, between John Scott's papers, those of Marguerite Scott and the papers relating to the Cachemaille and Boxer families. Photographic materials arranged as their own series. John Vivian Scott, an officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs, was married to Marguerite, who was related to both the Cachemaille and Boxer families. As a WREN (Women's Royal Navy Service) during World War II, Marguerite was involved with naval R/T intelligence, intercepting and tracking enemy vessels's radio transmissions in the Pacific. She also organised support, which included compiling a draft manual, for the spouses of Foreign Affairs officers serving overseas. Veronica Scott is one of John and Marguerite's children.
