Waitaki River (N.Z.) - Power utilisation

Tekapo Power Scheme (N.Z.), Waitaki Hydro Scheme (N.Z.), Waitaki River Hydroelectric System (N.Z.)

A series of interconnected lakes and canals used to generate electricity, also known as the Waitaki Hydro Scheme. Includes the Upper Waitaki Hydro Scheme. Begun in the 1920s with the Waitaki dam and completed in the 1980s with the commissioning of the Ohau C power station. After Tekapo A and Tekapo B Power Stations were transferred from Meridian Energy to Geneisis Energy in 2011, the term Tekapo Power Scheme was used to describe the operation of those two stations.

Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Railways album 3

Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. The only identifying information is a few pencilled notes giving some locations, but there are no captions identifying people. There is a large sequence showing events surrounding the first celebrations marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6th February 1934 attended by Lord Bledisloe. He had purchased the site, and donated money for the Treaty House renovations in 1932. The celebrations brought 10,000 Maori to Waitangi. The images show huge crowds, haka parties, various iwi performing, and parties of dignitaries including Lord and Lady Bledisloe, Joseph Gordon Coates and George William Forbes. Other scenes with Lord Bledisloe show him visiting the Waitaki Hydroelectric power station. Views of New Zealand include Government Tourist Bureau accomodation houses including those at Waitomo and the Hermitage (Mt. Cook); accomodation houses at Helensville and Parakai with interior and exterior views, and showing activities available (spa pools, games such as croquet, golf, and bowls); anglers standing by swordfish they have caught; skiing and ski lessons; and waterfalls. Industrial and agricultural views show dairy cows, citrus groves, the Kiwi Bacon Factory, printing presses, and race courses. Interview with Clarence and Jean Bateman

Description: Clarence Bateman was born at Totara Flat near Greymouth in 1912. Describes how his father remarried after his mother's death and he lived for two or three years at the Glendinning Home in Andersons Bay, Dunedin. Recalls that his father was in and out of work. Describes the family's move to Christchurch when his father remarried and Clarence Bateman's involvement in helping bring up the family. Describes doing well at school. Talks about his first job at the Aulsebrooks biscuit and sweet factory. Talks about his family's move to the Waitaki Hydro Scheme village where he and his father got jobs. Describes involvement in local sport, living in the single men's huts and meeting Jean Dakers. Describes the single men being put off during the Depression, returning to Christchurch and marrying Jean. Jean Bateman (nee Dakers) was born and spent her early years at Crown Terrace near Arrowtown and Frankton. Talks about the role of music in her family and her father's (John Dakers) writing. Notes that he had poems published in the Otago Daily Times. Describes the family's move to the Waitaki Hydro Scheme village about 1925. Recalls meeting and later marrying Clarence Bateman. Describes a number of places they lived in Christchurch during the Depression. Talks about Clarence Bateman's work with C.S. Lunnery. Recalls balloting for the house at 24 Beanland Ave (originally 24 McCombs Street) which was the second state house to be occupied in Christchurch. Notes that they were the first tenants of this house. Comments that when they arrived there were no neighbours, streets, footpaths, fences, carpets, blinds or curtains. Describes the opening of the house which was attended by M.J. (Micky) Savage and many MPs. Describes the house as well built in brick with a concrete tiled roof and wooden window frames. Notes that the rent was high but the house was well built. Describes regular visits by State Advances inspectors. Talks about house maintenance, purchasing the house in 1950 under the scheme which allowed tenants to capitalise their family benefit and buy their state house, and their occupation of the house for fifty years. Describes Jean Bateman's activities which include voluntary work at the Spreydon Public Library, membership of a choir and the Townswomen's Guild. Description: Interview with Michael Higgins, born in Blenheim 1942. Describes how his father Jim (James M) and uncle Terry developed their contracting business from six-horse teams to earthmoving machines. Mentions their work opening up the Blenheim to Picton highway, at Lake Grassmere, carting the first core material for the Pukaki Dam, and work in Southland and west Otago throughout the 1950s. Describes youthful learning about machinery from his father, and how he and his brothers (John, Kevin and Peter) all joined the family firm Higgins Earthmoving Company. Refers to going to the Benmore hydro scheme in 1960 and describes machinery his father imported for Benmore and other projects. Reflects on the scale of the Benmore dam, the quality of the work and the loss of expertise when the hydro schemes were completed. Refers to moving on to the Aviemore scheme, and a period of uncertainty before the Upper Waitaki schemes began. Mentions the company moved to Twizel in 1966, just before the Ministry of Works, and having roading contracts. Discusses the progression of work on the Upper Waitaki schemes, later work on irrigation schemes, and on the Clyde High Dam project. Refers to being moved into maintenance work reluctantly. Describes the company's record of 99.2% plant availability over the whole Upper Waitaki project because of its efficient maintenance systems. Comments on the Higgins Earthmoving Company accommodation and facilities at Otematata and later at Twizel, his mother cooking for their workers, and their staff becoming part of the family. Mentions growing up during the Depression near Christchurch and starting work with the Ministry of Works in 1944 at Napier as a draughting cadet. Outlines his work during the 1950s on hydro investigations, and transferring to Benmore in 1959 as a resident engineer. Refers to travelling to Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe on a Sir William Stevenson award to study practical engineering and visit major civil engineering projects and equipment manufacturers.
