Barton, Cranleigh Harper, 1890-1975

Author, lawyer and artist resident in Redcliffs, Christchurch for many years until his death. Great-grandson of the Rev Richard Taylor. Born Feilding, the son of Margaret Barton, née Harper, he graduated from Victoria University College in 1912 with a Bachelor of Law degree. He practised law in Christchurch, before going overseas in 1921 and studied art at the Slade School, London, 1924-1927. He returned to New Zealand in 1930. In later life, he was awarded an MBE. He travelled extensively throughout the world over many years, painting landscapes in watercolours. He also painted many watercolours of New Zealand. Large collections of his watercolours are held in the Alexander Turnbull Library and in Canterbury Museum.
