The oldest state school in Wellington. The School was founded as St Paul's School in April 1852 in Sydney Street East (now Kate Sheppard Place). In 1873 responsibility for the school (renamed Thorndon School) was transferred to the newly-formed provincial education board. In 1880 the School was moved to its present site in Hobson Crescent, between Hobson and Murphy Streets. St Paul's Schoolroom was built in 1897 from plans and spectifications drawn up by Wellington architect, John Swan. It was located on the southern side of Sydney St East and was relocated to the Thorndon School grounds in 1999 (published sources). At the archives of the Wellington Education Board there is an unpublished pamphlet `Early history of Thorndon', written by Denis E McDonald, 1957 which states that the early Thorndon School records were burnt [New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc, Wellington Group newsletter, Mar 1980] Built 1897, designed by J. S. Swan, located in Sydney Street East (later Kate Sheppard Place). A single-room school which later became Thorndon School.
