Description: Album includes a large section of British naval ships, some travelling in convoy, some camouflaged, with closeup views of armaments and naval personnel, taken by unidentified photographers during World War I. It appears that the creator of the album was serving on the SS Parattah. A section in the album covers a port-of-call by the Parattah to Nauru and the Loyalty Islands, showing scenes and aspects of life on the islands, including several related to the phosphate industry on Nauru. There are a number of images of a group on camels near the Spinx and pyramids in Egypt, dated 1919, followed by a section on the Yosemite area, California, with scenic views of mountains and valleys, and several showing the "largest tree in the world". The last section in the album covers the royal tour of HRH The Prince of Wales in 1920, in Sydney. German administration on Nauru : Official records

Description: The records begin with a report from a German official in Jaluit to the Duke of Bismarck, dated May 6 1887, stating that local German dirms had suggested that the German Protectorate of the Marshall Islands should be extended to cover Nauru. A report written in Jaluit on October 31 1888 , by Herr Sonnenschein, the German Imperial commissioner in the Marshall Islands, describes the raising of the German flag on Nauru on October 2 1888. There are several extensive reports on conditions on Nauru. The remainder of the documents deal with the German administration of Nauru. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s). Description: Presscopy letter books of outward letters from George C Ellis, A F Ellis, H E Denson and J T Arundel of the Australian Office of J T Arundel and Company and the Pacific Islands Company Ltd to business associates, mainly in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. The correspondence documents the early corporate history that led to the environmental devastation of both islands, the diaspora of Banabans to Rabi in Fiji and eslewhere, and the near-bankruptcy of Nauru. Arrangement: Some books indexed by subject and addressee. All arranged chronologically. John T Arundel, son of a LMS official, worked for a London firm with interests in guano, which took him into the Pacific. In 1892 Arundel formed his own company, J T Arundel and Company, which acquired concessions enabling it to make and market copra and phosphate. The Pacific Islands Company was formed in 1897 and in 1898 took over the assets of Henderson & McFarlane Ltd in the Mid-Pacific. Lord Stanmore (Sir Arthur Gordon, formerly Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific) was chairman of the PIC, with Arundel as its vice-chairman. In 1902 the PIC divested itself of non-phosphate interests and merged with the Jaluit Gesellschaft of Hamburg to form the Pacific Phosphate Company Ltd, with exclusive rights to the exploitation of phosphate in Banaba and Nauru. Source of title - Transcribed In 1987-1988 the government of Nauru held a Commission of Inquiry into the the rehabilitation of its worked-out phosphate lands, and in 1988 published a 10 volume report which concluded that island's former administrators - Australia, United Kingdom and New Zealand - were responsible for the rehabilitation of the land mined during the Mandate and Trust periods.
