Description: The story of two related families, Barraud and Chapman, who came to New Zealand as pioneer settlers. It touches on their voyages out on the Bangalore in 1844 and the Pilgrim in 1849, raising their children and the difficulties they had to overcome settling in. Through the letters of 12 year old Jessie Sarah Barraud it describes their two year trip home to England in 1875, the places they saw and the relatives they visited. Later in New Zealand the story recounts the day to day happenings, people and events that took place, paricularly in and around Wellington, as well as Milton and Wanganui. Description: Collection comprises 29 family letters. Includes correspondence from Jessie Sarah Barraud and her mother Sarah Maria Barraud to Charles (Charlie) Lewis Barraud, 1875-1877. These four letters were written from London as Laura Cottam and Jessie travelled with their parents on a two year trip of England which ended 1877. These letters detail relatives visited and places travelled to. Also correspondence from Jessie to her sister Laura (Cottie), 1879-1885. These letters are written by Jessie primarily from her family home `Fernglen' in Wellington. Letters detail life in the Barraud household, family business, social events in Wellington and local trips around New Zealand. Source of title - Supplied by Library Charles D Barraud was an artist and chemist. Arrived with his wife Sarah in Wellington on 20 August 1849. The couple had nine children including Laura Cottam and Jessie Sarah who were the youngest of the three daughters. In 1875 Sarah accompanied Charles, Laura and Jessie, on a trip to England.
