Clune, Frank, 1894-1971: World encompassed

Date: 1968

By: Clune, Frank, 1894-1971

Reference: MSX-10003

Description: An annotated unpublished travel journal written by the Australian travel writer, author, journalist, and businessman Frank Clune. Journal records Clune's journey around the world which includes time spent in New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific. The journal is annotated throughout, presumably by Clune, with corrections, additions, and pagination of chapters. Chapter headings provide a list of subjects covered, which include New Zealand history, colonisation, and race relations; art, both in New Zealand and internationally, particularly Paul Gauguin; Tahiti, and other Pacific Islands; Christopher Columbus, his exploration and colonisation of the Americas; and South Africa. Some of the New Zealand entries relate to conversations between Clune and Sir Henry Kelliher, businessman and art patron. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Typescript volume bound in full leather with raised bands, labels on spine, and gilt border, circa 510 pages, 27.3 x 22.6 cm. Provenance: Vendor indicates that they purchased this volume in the early 2000s in Auckland. This may have coincided with the disbursement of Kelliher's estate and book collection around the same time. The spine of the volume includes the label of Sir Henry Kelliher which may indicate that Kelliher once owned this manuscript -- it was possibly a gift from Clune -- and arranged for its binding.

Photographs of Sir Arthur Telford Donnelly and William Ian McLaren Donnelly

Date: 1914-1955, ca 2019

From: Elder, Ann Margaret, active 1956-2019: Collection relating to the Donnelly family and Irish studies

By: Spencer Digby Studios; Standish & Preece (Firm)

Reference: PAColl-10792

Description: Comprises several photographs of Sir Arthur Telford Donnelly and William Ian McLaren Donnelly, including images relating to Arthur Donnelly's occupation as Crown Solicitor and his service in World War I, and Ian Donnelly's work as a journalist. Most photographs taken by unidentified photographers between 1914 and 1955; identified photographers include Standish & Preece, and Spencer Digby Studios. Some colour photographic prints added by the Donnelly family circa 2019. Includes photographs of Ian Donnelly in his capacity as a journalist, and with members of the Donnelly family, possibly his own children. Also includes photographs of Arthur Telford Donnelly taken during World War One; with sporting associates; in his capacity as Chief Prosecutor; during the August 1949 investiture ceremony in which he was knighted by Governor General, Lord Bernard Freyberg; at Beath’s Lounge, with other war veterans; with the Bank of New Zealand and Beath and Company Boards of Directors; and during a 1951 visit to the Mayor of Dunedin, with Lord and Lady Jowett. Some photographs relating to Arthur Donnelly's service in World War One have contemporary photographs of medals pasted verso, and are annotated with contextual information. Several of the photographs are annotated with captions and contextual information; many are pasted on paper which features typed annotations, and many feature handwritten annotations verso of the print. Many of the photographs appear to have been cut from a photograph album and feature photographs of the Donnelly family, not relating to Arthur or Ian's careers. Some photographs feature newspaper articles pasted verso; it is unclear whether these relate to the content of the images. Title supplied by Library. Not all names associated with this collection have been indexed. Arthur Telford Donnelly was appointed Crown Solicitor for Christchurch in 1921, and became chairman of the Bank of New Zealand in April 1937. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1949 New Year Honours. Series 1 Correspondence with H J Kelliher relating to The Mirror

Date: 1932-1961

From: Field, Arthur Nelson, 1882-1963 : Papers

Reference: Series-4274

Description: This large sequence of letters is between A N Field and the editors and publisher of `The Mirror', owned by Henry Joseph Kelliher, 1896-1991, chair of Dominion Breweries. It contains letters or copies of letters by various correspondents, as Kelliher and the staff of the The Mirror sent on to Field (for him to adapt for his columns, or for his personal information) items they thought would interest him. Duplicate and draft copy for these columns (such as `Let's talk it over' and `The underside of current events'), often using nom-de-plumes such as `Aristotelian' or `Onlooker', is often attached to the correspondence, and there are also some letters to and from the accountants concerning payment for contributions. There are also many letters commenting on financial policy and the New Zealand economy and letters from Kelliher to politicians at least some of which were actually prepared by Field, particularly in the 1950s. No attempt has been made to list all the writers or contributors. The entire series has been arranged chronologically but there are some gaps (eg nothing for 1936 or 1940), suggesting that some controversial letters may have been eliminated. Quantity: 36 folder(s).
