Wylie, Mary Adelaide, -1944

Teacher. Known as Adelaide. She was the daughter of Thomas Wylie, a teacher at Te Houhi, and married Elsdon Best in 1903 at her father's home in Galatea, Bay of Plenty. The couple had no family (DNZB Vol 2 Elsdon Best). She was still living in Sept 1931, when Elsdon Best died. She died in 1944 aged 71 years [Source: Historical online BDM]

Description: A single-storied bungalow with a verandah, L-shaped, behind a hedge with garden gate The house, later burnt down, was the home of the Wylie family. Adelaide Wylie married Elsdon Best. The house was moved to the site shown in this view in 1889 by Joseph Wylie (uncle of Adelaide), the 4th schoolteacher at Fort Galatea (1887-1903). There were two matching buildings, shown here on the left, pulled to this site from the 1875 redoubt. The right hand addition was put on by Joseph Wylie. The small lean-tos on the far left were added by the Turnbull family, connected to the Wylie family by marriage and living at Galatea, 1909-1953. Mrs Waters informed the Library on acquisition that the house was burnt down on the eve of the Galatea centennial. Other Titles - Armed Constabulary Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
