Description: Birthday book originally belonging to Vida Stout née Pearce, and later to Annie Viola Kate Pearce, née Warren. Features entries in calendar date fields recording dates of birthdays, along with full page illustrations executed in pencil, ink, and watercolour, and autograph signatures clipped from documents and letters pasted in final pages. The birth dates range from Prince George, Second Duke of Cambridge in 1819 to Arthur Duncan Stout in 1922. The illustrations include - 'Golden Deed Lead on to Golden Days', by V[ida] P[earce], September 1894, in black ink wash. - 'East or West Home is best', black ink wash. - 'Ones own Hearth is golds worth', depiction of dandelions, black ink wash. - 'Moderation is good sense', botanical illustration, black ink wash. and numerous other illustrations in ink, pencil, and watercolour, some incorporating Māori designs and carving patterns. Some of the inscriptions and mounted autographs include: - Queen Victoria - John Lubbock - Joseph Chamberlain - Francis Dillon Bell - James Coutts Crawford - Samuel Langhorne Clemens, published as Mark Twain - Francis, Duke of Teck, autograph letter on printed letterhead "White Lodge, Richmond Park", dated 14 July 1894, mounted on page 63 - Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, note to "Miss Holmes" dated 6 November 1895 and others. The original owner's own entry "Mary Vida Pearce" is on page 43 in the field for 12 June, and [Agnes Isobel] "Pickle" Pearce in entry for 10 September, on page 67. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Volume bound in black leather, marbled endpapers and all edges gilt, with sketches and holograph inscriptions, including autographs, with embroidered scrim cover featuring Māori pattern design and name 'Vida' on front, 32 x 26 cm.
