[Beechey, Frederick William] 1796-1856 :[Landing in Bounty Bay, Pitcairn Island, Decemb...
Date: 1825
By: Beechey, Frederick William (Capt), 1796-1856; Lysaght family; Atkinson family
Reference: A-118-009
Description: Grass, rocks and coconut palms in the right foreground, more palms and dramatic rock formations with cliffs (known as St Paul's Rocks) in the background. Two longboats each with five occupants tossed in the surf in the centre foreground. Very similar to a sketch by Captain F. W. Beechey used as the basis for an engraving in his "Narrative of a voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait. (London, 1831), Vol 1, opp. p. 96. The original pencil sketch is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia (RNK 997/1). The Turnbull's watercolour is a view from a little further round Bounty Bay, but with the same rock formations in the background and two longboats tossed in the waves. It may be a variant version done by Beechey after the event, or may show the crew of H. M. S. Blossom being returned to their ship, rather than landing. Inscriptions: Wellington - inscribed on blue card, formerly part of the backing of the work. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on paper 71 x 100 mm Provenance: Atkinson family, originally from the Lysaght family of Taranaki.
