Description: Scrapbook kept by Westra concerning the controversy surrounding the publication of `Washday at the Pa' by School Publications Branch, Ministry of Education, in Jul 1964. The original version was ordered to be withdrawn (on 3 Aug) by the Minister of Education, Mr Kinsella, after earlier objections from the Maori Women's Welfare League and other groups, concerning some of the photographs which they believed were not typical of Maori living conditions at that time. The Minister ordered all 38,000 copies to be recalled from schools and destroyed. The new edition, published by Caxton Press, Christchurch, appeared in Nov 1964 and contained some 20 additional photographs and text identical to the first version being, as Caxton Press put it, "substantially the book as first issued".
