Runholder, orchardist, entrepreneur. Of 'Frimley', Hawke's Bay; third son of Bishop William Williams; founding member of the Wellington Sports Club ca 1910. Married Margaret Mary Beetham. Purchased 'Mangakuri' Run from Andrew Hamilton Russell in 1876.

Description: Collection comprises original and typescript copies of letters sent by John and Samuel Dutton Powdrell to their family members, between 1857 and 1859, and in 1879. Letters are sent from areas throughout Hawkes Bay, except letters written in 1879 that are sent from Kakaremea. Letters discuss the landscape and climate in New Zealand, conditions of settler life in Hawke's Bay (Ahuriri, Te Aute, Otawhao) and South Taranaki (Kakaramea), the cost of land and food, farming activities, and local or family news. John Dutton Powdrell also describes his voyage to New Zealand. Collection reference number and arrangement updated, December 2016. John Dutton Powdrell arrived in New Zealand from Cheshire, England, in January 1857. He found work as a farm cadet for Samuel Williams near Te Aute.
