Sinclair, Andrew, 1833?-1923

Surveyor. Born Glasgow; he came to Auckland in the 'Katherine Stuart Forbes' 1852 to join his uncle Dr Andrew Sinclair, then Colonial Secretary. Joined the Survey Department. Auckland's chief surveyor 1856-1892. [The Pioneer land surveyors of NZ / C A Lawn [qMS-1138, p 240]]

Description: Photocopied map of five adjoining cadastral plans of a small number of government reserves, lands sold and granted in military settlements. Covers the Upper Waikato region from Whatawhata, Newcastle, Horotiu, Hamilton, Cambridge, Kihikihi, Te Awamutu, Alexandra, Harapepe. Settlements and some roads are named. Confiscation boundaries are marked. A handwritten note states that areas with a pink tint are 'Lands sold', yellow tint 'Lands granted to military settlers", brown tint 'Land granted to natives', green tint 'Govt. lands', all of which cannot be distinguished on these photocopies. School reserves, school and hospital endowments, redoubts, a mission reserve, swamps, rivers, creeks, lakes, bush, tracks, tracks for bullock drays are included. All sections are numbered, very few have acreages and names of people. Names listed are: Hamlin, Vickers, Nga Ta Korua a Te Ra Whatiora?, Smith's of Greenfield, Heather's grant. Series title printed on each map: Military settlements. Each sheet is numbered 1 to 5. Title taken from Sheet No. 1. Each sheet has the handwritten inscription: CD (initials?) 69/5357 and bears the relevant sheet number, 1 to 5. A55 is handwritten next to the series title and is the aperture card number of the Dept. of Lands and Survey: Register of maps and plans. Quantity: 5 map(s). Physical Description: Photocopies, scale indeterminable, 175.8 x 172 cm. on 5 sheets each measuring 96.7 x 58.9 cm. or smaller.
