Quaker Mason, 1818-1903

Quaker, runholder, horticulturalist and politician. Married Jane Morris. Arrived with his wife on the NZ Company vessel 'Olympus' in Apr 1841, at Wellington; later established a horticultural business, Mason's Gardens, at Taita. Left for Hobart 1845, as a result of tension with Maori in the Wellington area, but returned 1851. Large land owner in Masterton and Hawke's Bay (owned over 12,000 in Maraekakaho by 1858). The letter content consists an annotated daily log of the voyage that departed England on 8 December 1840 until arrival in Wellington on 20 April 1841. Also includes selected comments on significant stages of the journey, weather and sea conditions, shipboard births and deaths, passing vessels, fellow passengers, the ship's doctor and the captain.
