Son of Captain James and Flora MacInnes (née McColl). Brother of Rev Duncan MacInnes of Oban and Cromdale. First cousin of Donald McLean (1820-1877). Came to New Zealand in 1853 and worked at various places (including a period at Maraekakaho with his cousins Alexander & Archibald John McLean). Returned to Scotland on Zealandia in Mar 1860. Took up surveying work on his return.
